The owners of this modern detached property in Nuneaton, Warwickshire asked if we could work our magic on their old garden as it was in need of some repair.
With a patchy lawn and old paving, our clients wanted us to replace their existing garden with something that was child-friendly, low maintenance and attractive to look at.
First, we laid foundations to support new walls, which we built up to the required height to make the garden child-friendly. As part of the walling, we constructed a step up into the garage to give the existing walls extra support.
The low wall surrounded a patio that we created using symphony paving in a light buff tone than contrasted with the grey stones of the walling. Pennant grey Tegula bricks were laid to edge the patio and seating area and to form the shape of the garden. The bricks also act as a lawn mowing strip for easy maintenance.
For the newly contoured lawn, we laid topsoil followed by Elliotts medallion fine quality turf. The result was a lush green lawn that brought colour and vitality to the garden. To add further colour and shaping, we cut low-level flowerbeds around the curves of the lawn.
Into the flowerbeds, we dug top soil and compost in preparation for the new planting scheme. As per our clients’ suggestions, we devised a low maintenance planting scheme designed to attract wildlife, bring colour, and provide scent and all year-round interest. The existing much-loved rose garden was relocated so that it still forms part of the overall garden design.
Along the right-hand side of the garden, we erected post and rail feather edge to provide privacy and security. Meanwhile, European fencing panels, with a curved top, were installed to the front and left-hand side of the garden.
To ensure that the garden stays looking fantastic we laid all paving on full mortar beds and grouted using a resin-based eco grout to reduce weeds growing between the joints of the stones.
And to keep puddles from forming, we installed a drainage system that will run into a poly cell soak away located under the flowerbeds. New land drains were also installed around the garden, and these will help moisture flow and prevent water from sitting in the flowerbeds.
To fulfil our client’s wishes, we looked at every aspect of the garden to make it child-friendly, especially in the design of the wall. The garden is now much more suitable for young children with its low-level walling and expansive lawn. The design is also in keeping with the style of the house, and it has given the exterior of the property a more coordinated look.
We included 18 months’ worth of complimentary lawn care with this project so we can be sure that the grass maintains its healthy appearance. We’ll also make a complimentary visit to the garden 12 months after completion to ensure our clients are still delighted with the results.
