A Garden for Partying Night and Day

The challenge

The owners of this lovely house in Sheepy Magna, Leicestershire asked us to take away their rather traditional garden and replace it with something more contemporary and functional.

Their wishlist included a sunken fire pit, outdoor kitchen and plenty of space to entertain. This gave our designer plenty to get his teeth into!

The concept

The first task for our team was to remove the existing pond, stream, rocks, pergola and lawn and prepare the groundwork and drainage for new hard standings.

We wanted to form a new patio and seating area from sandstone paving that matched the existing patio. Then we gave the old patio a jet wash and cleaned it to bring out its colours and refresh the stones.

The centrepiece circular patio feature came next, along with cutting edging strips into the existing patio and forming the shape of the new paving and seating plan. By using Marshalls traditional Tegula, we created winding pathways that run through the garden to link all areas.

While the circular seating area was the centrepiece of the garden, another significant feature was the raised barbecue, bar, and outdoor kitchen that we built with tier stone cladding and sawn stone surfaces.

A waterproof cedar shingle structure was constructed to cover the outdoor kitchen and entertainment area offering protection from the elements. Next to the covered outdoor kitchen, we built a sunken fire pit and stone seating with underground drainage.

Another eye-catching highlight of this garden was the stunning sandstone sphere water feature we created and surrounded with gravels, cobbles and low-level planting. The three water features we installed all run on independent pumps and water chambers.

Softwood pressure treated trellis screening was installed as well as a pergola across the top of the circular paved area under the tree to give privacy and protection. For the beds, we laid top soil and compost in preparation for our planting scheme, which consisted of low maintenance shrubs and included the removal and relocation of existing mature trees and plants.

For the lawn, we laid top soil followed by Elliotts medallion turf, which will receive 18 months of lawn care provided by specialists. The finishing touch was the electrical work that included all lighting units, sockets, cables and fixings – followed by the ambient lighting that will allow our clients to enjoy the garden late into the night.

The conclusion

This garden is full of eye-catching elements from the sunken fire pit and outdoor kitchen to the circular patio and three spherical water features. Our clients now have everything they could wish for when it comes to outdoor entertainment and every catering facility they need to hold party’s day and night.

We’ll visit this garden in 12 months’ time for a complimentary maintenance session – giving it a quick once over and tidy up to ensure it stays looking fantastic and in perfect shape to host the next outdoor party.
