Fresh and Classic Perfect for Garden Parties

The Perfect Place for Garden Parties

The challenge

Our clients owned a modern house in Scraptoft, Leicester and wanted a contemporary garden to match their home and lifestyle.

The existing garden consisted of a sparse lawn, broken fences and no plants. Our brief was to turn this empty space into a stylish, colourful garden that would be perfect for entertaining guests.

The concept

After the removal of existing paving, walling, rubble, and waste we prepared groundwork and drainage for hard standings including an Aco channel drainage system around the house to capture any surface water running from the paving we planned to install.

We used multi sandstone paving in soft grey tones to create a large patio space with all paving laid on full mortar beds and grouted using a resin based eco grout to reduce weeds growing between the joints.

To shape the pathways and the BBQ area, we used traditional Tegula bricks as well as using the same stones to edge the patio. These bricks helped us to define particular features and form the contours of the garden.

We next installed an additional sleeper across the top of the existing sleeper walling to raise its height and complete the retaining wall. Concrete foundationsfor this walling were installed to an approximate depth of 150mm to provide maximum strength. We also used planed timber sleepers to build raised flowerbeds.

For the lawn, we spread topsoil and then laid Elliotts medallion fine quality turf. This created a vibrant, fresh green lawn that will be easy to maintain. It also gave the garden a welcome burst of colour.

New top soil and compost were then installed in preparation for our planned planting scheme. Our low maintenance design, full of colourful and shapely plants, is intended to attract wildlife, provide colour and scent and offer year-round interest.

To make the garden more secure and private, we erected post and rail feather edge fencing along the left-hand side of the garden. Using existing paving, we installed a new utility area and incorporated a gravel section – the reason for this was to provide the garden with additional drainage. We then put a planed timber screen in position to hide the utility area.

Finally, we placed five spike lights amongst the plants to give subtle illumination throughout the garden. This will allow our clients to be able to enjoy their garden late into the evening.

The conclusion

This garden is now the perfect place for entertaining guests on warm summer days (and nights). It’s also easy to maintain, but at the same time full of colour and interest – it’s a classic design that will stand the test of time as it has been beautifully crafted with high-quality materials.

The paving provides plenty of entertainment space with a raised seating platform positioned towards the back of the garden as well as the extended patio laid close to the house.

Of course, our clients were delighted with their newly landscaped garden and couldn’t wait to show it off to their family and friends.
