The owners of this semi-detached house in Syston, Leicestershire were fortunate in that their house backed on to a beautiful country park. They were looking for landscape designers in the Leicestershire area who would be able to tackle a small garden design. As the homeowners were both retired, they confessed they wanted to spend less time working on their garden and more time sitting and enjoying the stunning outlook. Ideally, they wanted a low maintenance design that gave them a decent view and easy access to the park. The existing garden was a mixture of old square paving slabs and gravel with no real pathways. This was something we needed to address, as was the dilapidated state of the fencing surrounding the property.
For a change, our designer looked at the far end of the garden first to decide how to open up the view, before devising a low maintenance plan for the rest of the garden. The fencing at the back of the house was in a state of disrepair and urgently needed replacing. Using this as a starting point, we constructed a new fence along the rear of the garden and fitted a secure gate leading out to the park. As the land sloped downwards from the house towards the park, we cut the side fence panels at an angle, so they worked with the gradient of the land and slanted down to meet the height of the back fence. Next, we laid natural sandstone paving with a feature circular pattern using grey rumble setts. This gave our clients an even patio area where they could sit and relax outdoors. The same sandstone paving was used to create steps down to the gate and to form a small semi-circular feature step outside the garage door. We used wooden trellising to act as a divider and rail between the patio and the new steps leading to the gate. A small bed was cut around the base of the trellis to accommodate a low-level planting scheme. Four gentle steps led down to a gravelled area where we constructed a raised bed from wooden sleepers. This provided our clients with a trough-style container where they could grow a mixture of plants to add visual interest to an underused spot.
Our compact, small garden design ticked all the boxes. The durable sandstone paving requires no maintenance and is hardwearing enough to stay looking pristine for years to come. Attention to detail with regards drainage, materials used and simplicity of design makes this a highly practical and functional yet still attractive garden. By incorporating a raised bed and the small bed under the trellis, we were able to give our clients enough space to grow a few favourite plants to add colour and interest. But the central feature of this garden is the view that lies beyond. Our foremost achievement was to fulfil our clients’ wishes by providing them with a relaxing and pleasant setting where they can enjoy the surrounding landscape.
