A fresh and fabulous family garden

The challengeThe challenge

The owners of this neglected garden in Leicester wanted us to come up with a plan that would transform their current garden into a safe and pleasant place for their children to play.

At present, the level of the garden was uneven and full of different surfaces including patchy grass, worn gravel areas and ageing and cracked stones. Our first task was to remove all of the existing paving, walling, weeds, gravel, lawn and take it away for recycling.

Once we’d cleared the decks, we were able to set about installing foundations for new walling and steps to create a more functional garden with two even tiers.

The concept

The new wall and three low steps provided a gentle transition between the two levels of the garden, leading from the patio and seating area up to the lawn and flowerbeds. The walling was built with traditional Tegula walling bricks and backed up with a concrete support wall lined with a damp-proof membrane to prevent water from sitting behind the brickwork.

Polished sandstone paving was installed for the patio space and seating areas. The paving was laid onto full mortar beds and grouted using a resin-based grouting compound to stop weeds from growing through the joints. Marshalls Tegula setts were used to form a circular feature and create pathways that flow through the garden to link all areas.

Block edgings hug the contours of the lawn to make a permanent shape and act as an easy maintenance mowing strip. The block edges were set onto full mortar beds to prevent movement. The soft shades of the walling, paving and edging blocks have all been carefully chosen, so the colours blend together harmoniously.

We also constructed a sleeper wall, supported by 4×4 posts concreted into the ground. The sleepers were lined with a damp-proofer to protect the timbers from rotting. Sleepers were also installed in the top corner of the garden to retain the eye-catching slate water feature.

Sleepers were also used to retain the flowerbed running along the side fence and level up the lawn to provide the children with somewhere safe and pleasant to play. For the new lawn, we laid top soil and Elliotts medallion turf to produce a flatter and more usable space.

Recessed manhole covers were fitted into the paved areas along with Aco drainage channels to allow water to flow away and prevent puddling and flooding of the garden.

The conclusion

Our clients were delighted with the transformation of their garden, which now provides everything they’d hoped for. It’s a much safer place for their children to play while the grown-ups have smart seating areas for relaxing and entertaining.

8 months of lawn care provided by lawn specialists has been scheduled to give the grass the best possible start while a complimentary maintenance visit in 12 months’ time will ensure the garden stays looking fresh and new.

With a colourful planting scheme, a calming water feature, and lights to illuminate the beds, this fun and functional garden is vibrant and full of life.
