A low maintenance, high impact landscape garden design

The challenge

Stairs Garden Before TransformationThe owners of this ultra-contemporary detached house in Kettering, Northamptonshire wanted us to design a garden to match the style of their property.

Their ideal garden would include a fun place for the children to play as well as plenty of room for the grown-ups to entertain. It also needed to be low on maintenance but still have the ‘wow’ factor. At present, the garden was just laid to lawn, so we had a fairly blank canvas to work on.

The concept

Garden Design in 3D with hot tubThe focal point for the garden design was a stylish new patio with a circular block paving design. We surrounded the feature circle with Fairstone Sawn paving to match the existing paving and used an eco-fill grouting compound to prevent weeds growing between the joints.

Next, we removed existing composite decking and re-installed it to create a track in the children’s play area for the kids to ride around on their cars and bikes. A layer of specially blended material had been applied, compacted and levelled to form the play area. This was then covered with a geotextile membrane to prevent weeds growing and topped with rubber mulch chippings to give a safe and soft surface.

New steps and walling were built to retain and give access to the top level of the garden. This created a safe platform that provided access to the summerhouse and new brick barbeque area that we had constructed.

Brick built fish pond and firepit with Japanese plants aroundAn additional stunning feature of this design was the large semi-circular fish pond we installed in the corner of the garden. To make this even more eye-catching, we created a rock waterfall that cascades down into the water to add movement and sound to the landscape.

The fish pond comes complete with pond protector, pumps and filters, and we installed spotlights to illuminate the waterfall. By the side of the pond, we built a stone built fire pit, perfect for entertaining.

Now it was time to tackle the planting areas. First, we cleared out old tree stumps from the flowerbeds around the lawn and then installed additional turf to fill the two circles we had cut out. Then we crafted small flowerbeds along the top of the wall and planted box hedging to form a low barrier.

The planting scheme we devised was one that encompassed colour, texture and height. Using evergreen shrubs and colourful maple, we were able to quickly establish vibrant and attractive borders that contrasted beautifully with the green of the lawn and nearby trees. The planting scheme was designed with every season in mind, so there will be colour and interest in the garden all year round.

The conclusion

This wonderfully spacious garden is low maintenance, but high impact. It contains everything our clients asked for, and they are thrilled with the result. Now they can watch their children play from the comfort of their new entertainment space.

The finish on this garden is superb, thanks to our craftsmanship and the durable, high-quality materials we used – meaning this garden is going to stay looking fantastic for a very long time!
