A stunning and original new seating space

The challenge

The Hendry Garden before transformationThe Hendry Garden before transformationThe owners of this mature garden in the village of Cropston in Leicestershire wanted us to completely modernise their outdoor space. The current paving and walling were looking tired, and the lawn, which sloped upwards away from the house, was in need of rejuvenation.

We came up with a plan that would give our clients all the space they needed to entertain, plus a colourful, fragrant garden that would require hardly any work.

The concept

3D Garden design including BBQ & Fire PitFirst, we built a new retaining wall and steps to the upper level of the garden. The walling and steps were supported with concrete footing, and the wall was also lined with a damp proof membrane to prevent water sitting along the back of the brickwork.

Next, on the newly levelled upper tier, we laid an artificial lawn to create a safe play area. The lawn is dog-friendly and underlined with grit stone to eliminate smells and geotextile membrane to help reduce weeds. Edging blocks surround the grass, separating it from the flowerbeds.

3D Garden design including BBQ & Fire PitFor the lower level, nearest the house, we laid silver grey paving to form a new patio space outside the patio doors, running around a fire pit and barbeque. The paving continues up the steps to the upper level, forming an outdoor dining and entertainment area with plenty of space for tables and chairs.

All paving was laid onto full mortar beds to give strength and help to prevent future movement. Then we grouted all the paving with an eco-fill grouting compound to reduce weeds growing between the joints.

Using quarry grey walling bricks, we built a rectangular fire pit and stone seating – making an eye-catching visual focal point while at the same time providing a cosy place to sit. The new seating has a brick backdrop running around it to create a platform for standing glasses, cups or plates.

To enclose the garden, we erected new larch lap fencing along both sides to replace the existing panels. We used pressure treated timbers, supported by 3×3 timber posts that we concreted into the ground.

To finish, we dug small planting areas around the garden, introducing a planting scheme designed to add height, scent and colour – giving all year round interest. And to ensure surface water runs away from the patio, we installed an Aco channel drainage system around the paving. The drainage channels have easily removable lids for any cleaning and maintenance work.

The conclusion

Finished garden with BBQ, Fire pit and raised Patio area. It’s clear where the focus lies in this garden. The fire pit and seating are at the heart of this design, making a comfortable and stylish entertainment space, and our clients are delighted with the originality of their new garden.

The lawn and flowerbeds offer a stunning backdrop to the patio and as an added bonus, they’re designed to be extremely low maintenance. So when we come back on our scheduled maintenance visits, there should be very little work required.
