From Old and Unloved to New and Exciting

The challenge

BeforeThe owners of this semi-detached house needed a design that would modernise their rather out-dated back garden.

At present, the garden was looking rather cluttered and the lawn and paving slabs were beginning to deteriorate. Our clients asked if we could completely refresh the look of the garden, as it currently didn’t reflect the smart appearance of the property.

For ease of maintenance, they wanted us to reduce the size of the lawn and number of flowerbeds and focus on creating more seating and entertainment space.

The concept

Cornelia designFirst, we built a new sandstone patio space and pathways using a circular design with multi-toned and multi-sized stones with rumbled paving to highlight. Two separate pathways now lead from the patio nearest the house to a new, decked entertainment area.

The new decking platform was constructed from Trex spiced rum composite and built up around the existing summerhouse. This gave our clients a spacious raised level and added a new dimension to the garden. We installed lights into the face of the deck, and the steps that flowed around it, to further highlight this feature.

Next, we decided that this was a good opportunity to reduce and level the space given over to lawn. With one of the pathways intersecting the grass, we laid fresh turf and created an even lawn. The use of easy maintenance block edging strips helped to outline the contours of the paths and give a fluid flow throughout the garden.

We lined the flowerbeds with geotextile membrane and then covered them with plum slate chippings. Slate is not only low maintenance it also provides a colourful backdrop and contrasts well with the multi-toned paving.

Part of the rear of the property had been extended to incorporate a gym room and outside this we created another circular feature using grey rumbled setts. A pergola was attached to the gym extension and sits above the grey circle of stones.

As a finishing touch, we constructed a low semi-circular raised step outside the patio doors of the conservatory leading to the garden.

The conclusion

AfterOur clients loved their garden makeover. This really was a complete transformation from old and unloved to new and exciting.

As requested, we minimised the space given over to lawn and flower beds and maximised the areas that could be used for entertaining. The decking platform, complete with inset lights, was a real showstopper and draws the eye to this end of the garden.

The garden now compliments the exterior of the property and feels like a fun, fresh and modern place to relax and entertain.
