Leicestershire Garden Design Work Named Finalist for Best Dementia Garden 2016

We’re delighted to announce that a garden we built made it into the finals of the National Dementia Care Awards UK 2016.

The Awards celebrate the best people in Dementia Care in this country. On the 3rd November at a Presentation Dinner, the work of those who have produced excellence across all parts of this sector, and who continue to work to provide outstanding care, is rewarded.

Our team were honoured to have been mentioned in this prestigious line-up of people and companies that have contributed in a variety of different ways to dementia care in Britain. It was a great accolade to reach the finals.

The New Wycliffe Care Home Project

The Vista New Wycliffe Home is a high-quality residential care home situated in Rushey Mead, just three miles from Leicester’s city centre.

The home caters for older people with a sensory impairment and people living with dementia. As well as warm and welcoming communal living rooms, there are also quiet areas to sit and relax, and one of these is the spacious and attractive garden.

Our team were asked to construct a new garden for the home and to source suitable furniture for the use of residents.

The Dementia-Friendly Butterfly Garden

With sensory planting, new accessible pathways and a seating area, the new garden is somewhere residents can enjoy spending time.

We built three raised planters using smooth pressure-treated sleepers and filled these with top soil and compost in preparation for growing fruit and vegetables. We also used pressure-treated timber to construct a pergola alongside the pathway that adds further dimension to the garden and can be used to support climbing plants.

Finally, surrounding the garden is a new round top picket fence and secure gate. This is to protect residents, so they are able to walk freely and feel safe in the garden.

The Official Opening Ceremony

The Dementia-Friendly Butterfly Garden was officially opened on the 2nd June 2016, when staff, residents, and family and friends were able to enjoy the new dementia-friendly space.

Our team has been thrilled at the response to the garden and even more delighted to have been nominated for the Best Dementia Garden Award. It’s been a rewarding experience for all of us!

“I am so pleased to send you this certificate for making it to the finals in the National Dementia Awards UK, for the Best National Dementia Garden. This is huge, as it’s a very tough competition against projects across the country.

I just had to say a BIG THANK YOU for all your support in helping Vista and the New Wycliffe Care Home make this happen!”
