Back Garden goes from Basic to Beautiful

The challenge

Garden beforeOur clients lived in a modern detached property in Countesthorpe, a large village in the Leicestershire district of Blaby. The house was new, and the garden had simply been turfed with a path running to the gate through the lawn.

We were asked if we could design a spacious new patio with a section to house a barbeque. Our clients wanted to bring some colour and style to the garden so they could entertain in an attractive setting but didn’t want anything too high maintenance.

The concept

Garden designThe first priority of our landscape design was to include a large entertainment space of approximately 5m x 5m, to provide our clients plenty of room for tables and chairs.

Our plan for the patio included new grey multi sandstone paving, which we positioned to run out from the rear doors and into the garden leading to the entertainment area.

To the side of the entertainment space, we laid rumbled paving to create a section for a small barbeque. These rumbled setts have been used to flow around all the shapes in our plan, bringing the whole garden design together. They also form an easy maintenance surround to the lawn, keeping straggly edges in check.

To eliminate the work needed to take care of the flowerbeds, we used Lakeland blue slate installed on top of a membrane. Not only does this make attractive ground cover, it also keeps weeds at bay, meaning the flowerbeds will require little in the way of upkeep.

The vibrant blue slate complements the grey sandstone paving and gives another texture to the design. On the left-hand side of the garden, we placed stepping-stones through the slate chippings to provide access to the utility area.

Trellis screening was installed across the end of the garage to separate the utility area from the garden. A trellis was also attached to the garage wall, so our clients could train wisteria to creep across the structure to offer a splash of colour and add visual interest.

The conclusion

Garden afterThis simple design, with its clean lines and defined contours, transformed what was a basic back garden into a stunning outdoor space. Our clients were highly delighted with their eye-catching entertainment area and wanted to make sure it stayed looking great.

We arranged for them to receive a maintenance visit from our team 12 months from completion of their project. This visit will include a full clean down and tidy up of the new garden.

In the meantime, the lawn will receive four treatments from Green Thumb to ensure it stays looking just as fresh and vibrant, so the garden will look fantastic all year round.
