A Garden for Everyone to Enjoy

 The challenge

A Family Garden before TransformationThe owners of this semi-detached house in Birstall, Leicester asked us to modernise their traditional garden and level out their uneven ground.

The existing landscape comprised of an ageing patio to the rear of the property above a long lawn surrounded by borders with mature trees and shrubs. Our clients wanted us to create a new seating area close to the house and to modernise the look of their rather dated garden.

The concept

A Family Garden Transformation ConceptThe central feature of our garden design was the terrace that would overlook the lawn. We built a new patio to form an entertainment space, so our clients could step out of their French windows into an area that would form a natural extension of their home.

New walling was built to create the terrace, which was flanked either side by raised beds that slotted into the paved design.A circular raised bed was constructed as an eye-catching feature on the corner of the house and to give a boundary for the new steps to flow into.

We set the new walls onto concrete foundations, backed with concrete support walls and lined with a damp proof membrane. This strengthened the structure and protected the outer walling from water damage and frost.

Sandstone paving in multi-shaped squares was used to form the new entertainment space and pathway. The contemporary light grey stones flow down gentle steps to form a path that leads to the utility area on the lower level. The pathway then follows through an existing arch to link up with paving in the bottom section of the garden.

The paving is edged and defined by darker grey rumbled setts and grouted using eco-fill grouting compound. This is a resin based product that’s resistant to frost and helps to prevent weeds from growing up through the joints of the paving.

We dug up the existing lawn and replaced with topsoil that we levelled across the area to produce a flatter surface. With an even level formed we were able to install a new lawn using turf cut into the shape of the garden design.

Fresh topsoil was also added to the raised beds and borders. We took away many of the overgrown shrubs from the borders whilst retaining some low-maintenance mature conifers to give shape and colour.

The conclusion

A Family Garden Transformation completeOur clients were delighted with their newly transformed garden. They could now walk out of their house onto a chic new terrace that’s spacious enough to hold tables, chairs and a barbeque.

Borders and beds can be filled with stunning displays of plants; the lawn can be used for play while the entertainment area is designed for fun and relaxation. The garden now looks stylish and inviting with something for everyone to enjoy.
