5 easy ways to get your garden ready for autumn

The summer is drawing to a close and soon leaves will be falling from the trees. As your garden prepares to go to sleep for the winter, now’s the time to make those changes you’ve been thinking about for ages.

Autumn is an ideal time to tackle outdoor alterations that you couldn’t do in the summer months when your garden was in full bloom and constantly in use.

Time for a new lawn?

lawnDid your grass take a battering over the summer? Most lawns generally experience heavy usage during the warmer months.

Outdoor recreational activities and children playing can leave your lawn with bare patches. Additionally, the drier weather may have left your remaining grass looking brown and flat.

Autumn is a great time to take away the old and replace with the new, and our landscape gardeners are highly skilled at laying fresh green turf. We always use turf rather than seed as it can be installed at any time of the year and creates an instantly usable lawn.

A beautiful lawn can become the centrepiece of your garden. And if your grass never seems to grow healthily, we can firm up the ground with a layer of fresh topsoil packed full of nutrients. This will ensure your newly laid grass soon becomes established and stays green and healthy over winter.

Winter warming illuminations

lightWith Halloween and Bonfire Night approaching, there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the garden even though the nights are drawing in. But make sure you have adequate lighting to avoid accidents.

For security and safety reasons, it’s always advisable to have robust wall lighting on the outside of your property by the doors, which can also be used to illuminate paths and patios.

Floor lights can be inset into paving and these are ideal for highlighting seating areas or pathways. Post lamps can also be used as guides to clearly define a line of stepping stones or the route of a path.

When you’re entertaining, overhead lighting such as strings of colourful bulbs are perfect for decorating kids parties. In fact, there are numerous outdoor lighting options to choose from, so don’t let the shorter days and longer nights stop you from having fun outside.

Non-slip and durable driveways and patios

DrivewayIt’s not just your lawn that’s subject to wear and tear during the summer. Your patio and paving may also be looking rather worn. Autumn is the perfect time to install new driveways and patios before the freezing weather sets in, especially if your existing paving can become slippery in winter.

If you fancy installing a new patio, then you’re spoilt for choice. There are a vast number of designs to choose from in an array of hardwearing and low maintenance natural stones. Additionally, you can choose a stone that’s textured to ensure a non-slip surface.

Whatever the size of your garden, we can provide a shapely patio that will make the most of the space you have and give you a fun and functional place to socialise. Or we can design a driveway that maximises the potential of your exterior landscape.

Your perfect planting scheme

PlantingWith autumn approaching, plants that reached their peak in late summer will start to die back and become straggly. As you clear away overgrown foliage, have a think about what you’d really like to see growing in your garden.

Now is the time to create borders for the new planting year or to consider raised beds. The beauty of raised beds is that they’re much easier to control in terms of soil and maintenance.

Existing beds can also be boosted with nutrients to help you grow the plants of your choice. From fruit and veg to colourful flowers and shrubs, we can create the perfect environment for your plants, whatever you decide to grow.

Shelter from the rain

PergolaIf the cooler weather doesn’t deter you from enjoying the great outdoors, don’t let the rain put you off. Why not position an outdoor shelter in your garden to protect yourself from the elements?

A covered pergola over a patio or decked area will mean you can still enjoy your garden even when it’s raining cats and dogs. Or how about a stylish gazebo where you can either keep an eye on the children at play or just sit and watch the world go by.

A simple structure can give you the chance to stay outside even when the autumn rain clouds loom.
